Behavior and Brain (Haskins Laboratories, USA)

You will be asked to bring your child to Haskins Laboratories in New Haven.

During the initial visit, your child will be given a number of written and oral tests that provide us with a better understanding of cognitive strengths and challenges.

In the following visits (two to three), your child will be given 3 implicit learning tasks in three different modalities (vision, hearing and touch): your child will be introduced to pictures of symbols on a computer screen, to sounds over headphones and to gentle vibrations on the finger tips through specially designed gloves. The tasks are created in such a way to be fun for the children.

The last visit will be held at the imaging facility at the Yale Medical School. Your child will be asked to enter a magnet bore (MRI) where she will be asked to watch symbols and press buttons while pictures of her brain activity are taken. Such MRI tasks allow us to better understand the brain basis of implicit learning.

Intervention (The University of Edinburgh, UK)

You will be asked to bring your child to the Psychology or Clinical Psychology Departments at The University of Edinburgh. Alternatively, you will be asked to give us permission to visit your child on the school premises.

During the initial visit, your child will be given a number of written and oral tests that provide us with a better understanding of cognitive strengths and challenges.

In a second visit, your child will be given a visual implicit learning task, which introduces pictures of symbols on a computer screen. During the same visit, we will train your child on how to play I-L3.A.R.N. presented on a portable device or regular computer. Your child will be required to continue using the application at home for about 2 months over the summer break.

In the last visit, your child will be given part of the written and oral tasks from the initial visit and the visual implicit learning task.
